Keeping comic books safe is their intended purpose. You wouldn't just toss them into a box without any sort of protection and put them away. This is why plastic sleeves for comic books were invented.
When exposed to direct sunlight, comic books quickly discolor and fall apart. Comic books are made of paper, making them vulnerable to damage from moisture and humidity.
You should secure your comic book collection whether you're amassing them for fun or as an investment.
Obtain some plastic sleeves for your comics immediately. Although the term "sleeve" is more accurate, the term "comic book bag" is also commonly used.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. I plan to write more product reviews in the near future.
Basics of Comic Book Sleeves And Boards
Three distinct varieties of comic book sleeves and boards exist.
Polypropylene comic book sleeves are by far the most widely available option. They are inexpensive.
Polypropylene comic book sleeves, on the other hand, do not help disperse the paper's off-gassing natural combustibles. The comics inside may deteriorate, discolor, or even rot.
The polypropylene sleeves should be acid-free. Your comics will look even worse because of production costs.
However, polypropylene comic sleeves have a tendency to adhere to the comic paper. Either the friction or the slow release of gases will cause it to ripple.
The lifespan of polypropylene comic sleeves is between three and eight years. They may have done damage to your comics months in advance. You should probably replace your polypropylene comic book sleeves every few years.
Your comic books will last longer if you purchase thicker polypropylene sleeves to store them in. However, polypropylene bags do not prevent their contents from deteriorating when exposed to sunlight.
When compared to polypropylene, polyethylene comic book sleeves are superior. They are slightly more resistant to sun damage.
Mylar sleeves are the best option for long-term storage of your comic books. How to preserve rare comic books is a topic for a future column.
Documents from the United States Library of Congress's archives are preserved in mylar sleeves. The Mylar sleeve for comic books is impervious to gas diffusion, sunlight, and paper adhesion. Mylar comic book sleeves have a potential lifespan of 150 years under ideal conditions.
Caution Is Advised
To preserve their condition, comic books should be stored in a dark place.
When the comics are packed too closely together, the paper inside the box ripples because of friction.
Wraparound flaps are standard on comic book sleeves. Some comics have a seal you can apply to the top to keep the contents inside. Flap tucking is a personal preference. They may also use tape to close the comic book.
Never tuck in the flap after sealing the comic with the adhesive strip. Your comic book might get stuck in the flap because of the adhesive left behind.
Trees are harvested for their wood to create paper. There are living organisms behind paper. Therefore, your comic book paper will gradually give off gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and others as time passes. Your comic book may start to slowly disintegrate or rot depending on the material of the comic sleeve it is packed in.
As was previously mentioned, comic books printed on polypropylene are inexpensive. However, every five to eight years, you'll need to get new ones if you want to keep your comic books safe.
After placing your comic books in protective sleeves, you should invest in cardboard backboards to give them even more solid support. This is especially the case if your collection includes hundreds or thousands of comics.
Spending a little more on polyethylene mylar may be your best bet. If you carefully package your comic book, it will be safe during transit.
Comix Armor
Reusable comic book bags manufactured by Comix Armor are available for purchase on their website in at least 4 packs each.
These bags are made out of a see-through material that is polypropylene. The most straightforward method for transporting your comic books is to use a backpack. About two millimeters is the thickness of the bag when it is empty.
In addition, there is no use of acids in the manufacturing process of this product.
The width of the adhesive strip that is located on the resealable back flap of Comix Armor Re-Sealable Comic Book Bags is one and a half inches. If you properly encase your comic book, you won't have to worry about moisture or sunlight causing damage to it.
BCW Comic Book Bags with Re-Sealable Zipper
Amazon sells 100-count boxes of BCW's reusable comic book bags.
The polypropylene material used in these bags is transparent. This is the most fundamental option for carrying your comic books around. The empty bag has a thickness of about two millimeters.
In addition, no acids are used in the production of this item.
The adhesive strip on the resealable back flap of BCW Re-Sealable Comic Book Bags measures 1.5 inches in width. You don't have to worry about moisture or sunlight damaging your comic book if you properly encase it.
BCW Comic Book Wrappers
When it comes to comic book bags, BCW Thick Comic Book Sleeves are identical to BCW's standard resealable brand.
However, there are two key distinctions to note.
This comic book sleeve is larger in size and made of plastic that is slightly thicker. This sleeve is perfect for comics that exceed the standard 22–32 pages in length.
Leffis One Hundred Comic Book Boards and Sleeves
If you're new to comic book collecting, I highly recommend picking up a set of Leffis 100 comic book sleeves and boards.
You get 100 comic book sleeves and 100 matching boards, which is more than any of the other manufacturers on this list. Put the comic in between the sleeve and the board after inserting one board into the sleeve.
You should know that the backing board may prevent your comic book from fitting in the sleeve if it is particularly thick. These board and sleeve combinations are made for a single 32-page comic book. While it's possible to squeeze into two, doing so will do lasting damage to the comics.
50 Comic Book Boards and Sleeves, Big Fudge
When it comes to keeping comic books safe, Big Fudge is a popular choice.
The polypropylene construction of these comic book sleeves is standard fare in the industry. To counter this, Big Fudge says their polypropylene sleeves' proprietary coating of "Archival Buffer" makes them last longer and better protects your comics.
Bags and Boards for One Hundred Comic Books, by Colin Guardin
Many of the polypropylene comic book sleeves on this list are similar in style to those featured in Colin Guardin's 100 Comic Book Sleeves and Boards.
They are safe for your comic books because they contain no acid. The manufacturer, however, insists that these comics can withstand rain or snow. This brand of polypropylene back reduces friction and safeguards comic books, as opposed to cheaper alternatives that leave ripples and stick to comic book paper over time.
EnvyPak Premium Comic Book Sleeves with Color Coding
The polypropylene used to make EnvyPak's comic book sleeves is twice as thick as that used by competitors. The 30 count of 4.5 mm thick comic book sleeves sold by EnvyPak is a steal.
Your comics will be protected from wear and tear for twice as long as the industry standard two millimeters of sleeve width.
In addition, the edges are color-coded for easy sorting of your comic book collection.
